As someone who has helped organisations large and small to set up schemes using external and peer mentors,(including the training of mentors and scheme evaluation) l agree with Alic that a scheme will fail if it is set up incorrectly, i.e. to correct a management failure through the backdoor. The first principle in establishing a scheme is clarity and ownership of its aims, with an agreed understanding of what mentoring is. Unless this is clear and realistic, it won't work!! In consulting with organisations, this has to be the starting point. 'What is your understanding of mentoring and what are you trying to achieve?' Do not go past GO until this is clear.
